As I walked onto campus this morning, I heard all of the alarms go off and saw a large crowd outside all of the buildings. I totally forgot that there was a drill today. Luckily, I wasn't in class in the business building when the alarms went off because those alarms are so ear-piercing, especially when they have alarm speakers in each classroom. They've actually have gone off while I was taking an exam and it totally starttled me and everyone in the class. I think the business building and Joe West should switch fire alarms. We all remember sleeping through this pathetic alarm when we lived in the dorms!
Now some people are asking how I got that audio file. Sometime in either September or October of 2000, yet another fire alarm activation occurred in Joe West. Always wanted to show off how pathetic the alarm was, I grabbed my cordless phone, dialed into my campus voice mail, and held the phone up against the alarm speaker. I then transferred the voice message onto my computer, tweaked out most of the background noise, and made it into an MP3 that was originally privately shared on the campus ResNet. There was one time Todd played the file on his computer which was hooked up to his amplifier and little midget Danny came running down with his scanner in hand and lanyard in his mouth trying to figure out if it was the fire alarm. Ah, those were good times!
Here I am, finally winding down after an unexpected, funfilled weekend.
FRIDAY
Originally, I planned to do some cleaning in my room, but that ended up not being done. Sometime in the afternoon, I went to Border's in Sunnyvale to pick up a copy of All the Rave: The Rise and Fall of Shawn Fanning's Napster. The author of the book was on TechTV's The Screen Savers on Wednesday and after his interview, I was eager to read the book.
After finding the book on the shelf, I sat down and read the first three chapters. I was originally going to read just the first chapter, but I couldn't stop reading it. It's amazing to read how a trusted family member can betray you because of his personal financial issues. Even though I rarely used Napster (SJSU ResNet blocked Napster's ports), I have always admired Shawn Fanning's ambition. I really feel sorry for the guy after reading how his uncle treated him.
Later on that night, I went to see Sweet Charity on campus. Saw a bunch of guys from the dorms there and afterwards hung out with a couple of them (John & Leah) and had some beers. We were at the Flying Pig and it happened to be their 8th year anniversary celebration. They had a DJ there and later had a champange toast. Later on, Roshnee and Lisa show up. We all end up going to the Brit to end the night. When the Brit closed, we went to Denny's, where Roshnee got upset after an event that occurred because of ignorance.
Rosh and I ended up staying at Lisa's house that night.
SATURDAY
Lisa takes Rosh and I back to my car on 4th Street. Roshnee joins me and we stop by Jamba Juice on my way back to my apartment. After taking a shower, we head over to Roshnee's where she made the San Gria for the Cinco de Mayo party at the guys' (and Lisa's) house. Having not actually seeing her in a couple of weeks, we took a lot of time catching up with the happenings with the other people we know. While we were there, Brian calls my cell and asks when we were coming over. He said that there were people there already. Roshnee informed me that when Brian says that, it just means it's just Brian and Chris, which was indeed the case.
